Before our wedding, I was extremely nervous about writing and saying my wedding vows. I stayed up worrying about it for months, but when the time came I was so caught up in “our moment,” the nerves disappeared – all I could think about was how much I loved him and I gave the speech of my life. And let me tell you, I will never forget it.
these are my promises…
I promise to listen to your advice and to occasionally take it.
I promise to comfort you when the Patriots lose and to drink beers with you when they win.
I promise to cook you dinner and to always watch you do the dishes.
Most importantly, I promise to love you every day for the rest of my life.
Todd and I both have a pretty good sense of humor so I knew that I wanted my vows to make him laugh at some points. Hence, “I promise to comfort you when the Patriots lose and drink beer with you when they win.” I knew we would both have some nerves and and that hopefully a laugh would alleviate them for a minute. And that is exactly what happened. Not only did our friends and family laugh, but we did too. And in that moment, in front of everyone, we just felt like “us.” I think that is so important when it comes to your wedding ceremony.
My best advice to anyone writing wedding vows is to speak from the heart. Don’t be afraid to let your personality and sense of humor shine through. Yes, the marriage and the vows are super serious but the exchanging of the vows should be on your terms and if they only make sense to the two of you, well… that’s all that matters.
